Opening reception Saturday May 5th 2-4pm

Alberta Society of Artists Main Gallery

Upstairs above the Crossroads Market

#222 - 1235 26 Avenue SE, Calgary, AB T2G 1R7

Over the last year or and a half, I created monotypes as physical limitations prevented me from working on large paintings. I love the rich organic patina of these pieces, and the limited control that the process affords.

This exhibition’s theme is focused on the social and political conditions of global society today. I do not draw my creative inspiration directly from politics, race, gender or activism. However, like most creative individuals, I am impacted by these forces - in my case, particularly the degradation of community and connection and the instability in cultural sectors. I find I must continue to do the work that I feel deeply in order to feel whole.

The work included in this exhibition is also applicable to the ‘No Fear’ theme as it will be the first time I have exhibited my monotypes/drawings. This new way of working involves considerable room for chance, rather than tightly controlling the process, and I love the results that emerge.

The solo exhibition features both large and small works. These paintings offer a more mature artistic response to the landscape that has inspired me since childhood. In their essence, these bright bold paintings and collages reflect the dynamic summer landscape of Alberta.

The theme, “Land As Muse” is right up my alley. I’ve been inspired by the landscape since girlhood trips across the prairies to visit my Baba, staring chin-on-hand the entire trip.

My current work incorporates views of the landscape from many perspectives: a typical human viewing perspective, aerial looks, zoomed in on small tangles, and a sense of landscape shifting over time. As I work, I feel that I am writing the story of the landscape on my panels.

This painting is a very abstract take, but includes references to textured snow and fields, the scrubbly lines of brush and winter branches, and the shapes of fields, ponds, corrals.

“ASSEMBLY REQUIRED”

Online exhibition

The Artist Alliance

I am very happy to have been selected for this international online exhibition juried by The Artist Alliance.

This exhibition focuses on work that involves something particular in terms of assembly or installation.

What You See Is the Fog’s Choosing is a series of three panels (two shown installed here) with acrylic and drawing media on translucent mylar. The sheets float and stir as air moves past them. As people move behind and between the layers, you see hints of shape and movement.

This work was inspired by the way objects, buildings, and entire mountains appear and disappear in the fog and mist of the port edge of the city.
