THIS LAND

These paintings are inspired by the landscape of my home in north central Alberta. I am perched on the northern edge of the prairie, where the boreal forest starts to inform the landscape.

I see this land as characterized by sweeping dualities: land and sky; the geometric order of the road grid and man-made structures overlaid on the contours and wildness of the land, the calligraphy of trees and scrub playing against the big block shapes of fields and sky. The colors of early spring also show up: the soft gold of straw stubble, the blue of sky and icy lakes, the blacks of trees against white snow.

I'm interested in the way the man-made (road grid, farm structures) interacts with the organic (waterways, valleys, etc) and how that and other dualities mirror human nature - the inexplicable/intuitive and the intellectual/describable aspects of our being.
